THE DREAMING SPIRES
New Single ‘Normal Town’
Out June 27th
"...pays homage to American rock idols like Big Star, with Byrdsy harmonies
and charming accents" - Time Out New York
''...power-pop hooks and sweet harmonies'' 8/10 UNCUT
Acclaimed Oxfordshire five-piece The Dreaming Spires mark their eagerly awaited return with the release of new single, ‘Normal Town’, on June 27th (Clubhouse Records). The track heralds the band's first new material in nearly a decade and sets the stage for their forthcoming new album, due for release on October 24th.
First single and title track to the new album, 'Normal Town', is a piano ballad overlaid with harmonies and eerie synth, that captures 'the ambivalence a lot of people feel towards their hometown.' Inspired by coverage of a 2017 study which showed that Didcot, their local town, is the closest to the statistical median on several metrics and was dubbed 'the most normal town in England'. The track sets the scene for a record that explores themes of home, nostalgia, alienation and the beauty of everyday life, blending 60s rock 'n' roll influences with chamber pop accents, underpinned by a subtle layer of political commentary.
The Dreaming Spires are a popular British band best known for their distinctive harmonies, roots-infused sound and Americana-tinged indie rock. Brothers Robin and Joe Bennett formed the early 2000s Oxfordshire indie band Goldrush, who signed to Virgin Records. Over the last decade, they have toured the world as part of Saint Etienne's live band and the award-winning Bennett Wilson Poole. Jamie Dawson drums for touring US artists such as Annie Keating and Carter Sampson, while Tom Collison also plays keys in Danny & the Champions of the World. Nick Fowler is band member of choice for the likes of Gaz Coombes and Peter Buck.
The Dreaming Spires debut single, Everything All The Time, was released in 2012, followed by debut album Brothers in Brooklyn (2013) - both on Clubhouse Records. The album was compared to "Big Star by way of Gram Parsons and Teenage Fanclub" by the Independent. The band's second album, Searching for the Supertruth, featured in Americana UK as one of the Top 10 British Americana albums of the 21st century, and also earned the band nominations for Album and Artist of the Year at the UK Americana Awards. This led to a performance at AmericanaFest in Nashville followed by recording at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis. These recordings went on to form part of the Paisley Underground EP (2016) on At The Helm Records.
In addition to their standout live performances, including their recent show at Americana Week in Hackney, the band immersed themselves in various creative projects. This year The Dreaming Spires celebrate their return with an impressive new record and UK tour dates, marking the next chapter in their illustrious journey.
