Produced by acclaimed songwriters and producers The Dunwells, Out of the Dark encourages its listeners to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, and to speak up when you’re struggling.
Jasmine Watkiss explains the writing of the song, “It may be hard to believe, but I had terrible stage fright for several years, and every live show in that chapter of my life was a physical and mental struggle. At a particularly low point, I considered quitting music for good. I was so close to letting my mental health get the better of me and putting an end to Roswell Road’s journey. Eventually, I took myself off to therapy and booked some singing lessons, and after a lot of work on myself, I wrote Out of the Dark. I wanted this song to chart my recovery and the work that is required to live with anxiety. I also wanted to normalise vulnerability and talk about the toll that being a musician can take on your mental health. Musicians often feel we have to make it look like we’re thriving 100% of the time - and let’s be honest, that’s fiction. For a long time, I felt I couldn’t show my anxiety, but as soon as I found the courage to talk - and sing - about it, I started to feel better. Fear is an essential ingredient in bravery - don’t let it stop you from doing things.”
Jasmine Watkiss and Zoë Wren formed Roswell Road after a chance meeting in a bustling market square in Cambridgeshire. Their musical chemistry was instantaneous, and they have been performing and writing songs together ever since. The London-based multi-instrumentalists combine close harmonies with candid storytelling, drawing on experiences ranging from mental health issues to family love and real-life activist adventures at sea.
Roswell Road’s sound, which draws comparisons to artists like First Aid Kit and Fleetwood Mac, has earned them recognition far and wide. After winning the Purbeck Rising competition in their first year as a band, their debut EP was awarded Fatea EP of the Year, and they also won the Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Competition. With sold-out performances at London's Green Note and appearances at festivals across Europe, including Costa Festival in Ibiza, and a showcase at MiCannes in France, Roswell Road are grabbing attention wherever they go. The duo performed at Your Roots Are Showing in Ireland in 2025 and has a forthcoming official showcase at Folk Alliance International in New Orleans this January. They have toured Germany and Canada, shared the stage with artists such as Catherine McGrath, John Smith, and Dea Matrona, and performed at various festivals, including the Cambridge and Shrewsbury Folk Festivals, as well as the Fête de la Musique in Geneva.
Roswell Road are bringing Rebel Joy to life with the help of their fans through a Kickstarter campaign. Surpassing their funding goal in just 16 hours, they have now set their sights higher, aiming to create even more magic with a full-band launch show and a brand new music video.
